Context of Genesis 37:31
29Later Reuben returned to the cistern to find that Joseph was not in it! He tore his clothes, 30returned to his brothers, and said, “The boy isn’t there! And I, where can I go?” So they took Joseph’s tunic, killed a young goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood. 32Then they brought the special tunic to their father and said, “We found this. Determine now whether it is your son’s tunic or not.” 33He recognized it and exclaimed, “It is my son’s tunic! A wild animal has eaten him! Joseph has surely been torn to pieces!”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-36Verses 31-36 When Satan has taught men to commit one sin, he teaches them to try to conceal it with another; to hide theft and murder, with lying and false oaths: but he that covers his sin shall not prosper long. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 31-3331-33. they took Joseph's coat--The commission of one sin necessarily leads to another to conceal it; and the scheme of deception which the sons of Jacob planned and practised on their aged father was a necessary consequence of the atrocious crime they had perpetrated. What a wonder that their cruel sneer, "thy son's coat," and their forced efforts to comfort him, did not awaken suspicion! But extreme grief, like every other passion, is blind, and Jacob…Read the comment
