Context of Ezekiel 36:17
15I will no longer subject you to the nations’ insults; no longer will you bear the shame of the peoples, and no longer will you bereave your nation, declares the sovereign Lord.’” 16The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, when the house of Israel was living on their own land, they defiled it by their behavior and their deeds. In my sight their behavior was like the uncleanness of a woman having her monthly period. 18So I poured my anger on them because of the blood they shed on the land and because of the idols with which they defiled it. 19I scattered them among the nations; they were dispersed throughout foreign countries. In accordance with their behavior and their deeds I judged them.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-24Verses 16-24 The restoration of that people, being typical of our redemption by Christ, shows that the end aimed at in our salvation is the glory of God. The sin of a people defiles their land; renders it abominable to God, and uncomfortable to themselves. God's holy name is his great name; his holiness is his greatness, nor does any thing else make a man truly great.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17Covenant curses came to Israel because the people defiled their land through sinful behavior. A menstrual cloth became polluted by contact with a woman's monthly blood flow. This natural process was not sinful, but it made people ceremonially unclean. Any loss of bodily fluids, like blood, sweat (see study note on Ezekiel 44:17–19), or semen, also caused ceremonial uncleanness (see Leviticus 15).Read the comment
