Context of Daniel 2:1
In the second year of his reign Nebuchadnezzar had many dreams. His mind was disturbed and he suffered from insomnia. 2The king issued an order to summon the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and wise men in order to explain his dreams to him. So they came and awaited the king’s instructions. 3The king told them, “I have had a dream, and I am anxious to understand the dream.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1The second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar - That is, the second year of his reigning alone, for he was king two years before his father's death. See the notes on Daniel 1:1; (note). This was therefore the fifth year of his reign, and the fourth of the captivity of Daniel. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar - There is an apparent chronological difficulty in this statement which has given some perplexity to expositors. It arises mainly from two sources. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-491. second year of ... Nebuchadnezzar--Da 1:5 shows that "three years" had elapsed since Nebuchadnezzar had taken Jerusalem. The solution of this difficulty is: Nebuchadnezzar first ruled as subordinate to his father Nabopolassar, to which time the first chapter refers (Da 1:1); whereas "the second year" in the second chapter is dated from his sole sovereignty. The very difficulty is a proof of genuineness; all was clear to the writer and the original…Read the comment
