Context of 2 Kings 25:18
16The bronze of the items that King Solomon made for the Lord’s temple – including the two pillars, the big bronze basin called “The Sea,” the twelve bronze bulls under “The Sea,” and the movable stands – was too heavy to be weighed. 17Each of the pillars was about twenty-seven feet high. The bronze top of one pillar was about four and a half feet high and had bronze latticework and pomegranate shaped ornaments all around it. The second pillar with its latticework was like it. The captain of the royal guard took Seraiah the chief priest and Zephaniah, the priest who was second in rank, and the three doorkeepers. 19From the city he took a eunuch who was in charge of the soldiers, five of the king’s advisers who were discovered in the city, an official army secretary who drafted citizens for military service, and sixty citizens from the people of the land who were discovered in the city. 20Nebuzaradan, captain of the royal guard, took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Seraiah the chief priest - Zephaniah - The person who is here called the second priest was what the Jews call sagan, a sort of deputy, who performed the functions of the high priest when he was prevented by any infirmity from attending the temple service. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18It devolved on Nebuzaradan to select for exemplary punishment the persons whom he regarded as most guilty, either in respect of the original rebellion or of the protracted resistance. Instead of taking indiscriminately the first comers, he first selected those who by their offices would be likely to have had most authority - the high priest; the second priest (2 Kings 23:4 note); three of the temple Levites; the commandant of the city; five members of the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-21Verses 8-21 The city and temple were burnt, and, it is probable, the ark in it. By this, God showed how little he cares for the outward pomp of his worship, when the life and power of religion are neglected. The walls of Jerusalem were thrown down, and the people carried captive to Babylon. The vessels of the temple were carried away. When the things signified were sinned away, what should the signs stand there for? It was righteous with God to deprive…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-20Instead of deporting important citizens and officials like during the Babylonian invasion of 597 BC (2 Kings 24:14), Nebuchadnezzar executed these leaders. He even had religious leaders killed. Seraiah, the high priest, was killed. But his son Jehozadak was exiled (1 Chronicles 6:15). This allowed the priestly line to continue in captivity and later return to Jerusalem, starting in 538 BC (Ezra 1:1–2:20).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 8-188-18. on the seventh day of the month ... came Nebuzar-adan--(compare Jr 52:12). In attempting to reconcile these two passages, it must be supposed either that, though he had set out on the seventh, he did not arrive in Jerusalem till the tenth, or that he did not put his orders in execution till that day. His office as captain of the guard (Ge 37:36; 39:1) called him to execute the awards of justice on criminals; and hence, although not engaged in the…Read the comment
