Context of 2 Kings 11:13
11The royal bodyguard took their stations, each holding his weapon in his hand. They lined up from the south side of the temple to the north side and stood near the altar and the temple, surrounding the king. 12Jehoiada led out the king’s son and placed on him the crown and the royal insignia. They proclaimed him king and poured olive oil on his head. They clapped their hands and cried out, “Long live the king!” When Athaliah heard the royal guard shout, she joined the crowd at the Lord’s temple. 14Then she saw the king standing by the pillar, according to custom. The officers stood beside the king with their trumpets and all the people of the land were celebrating and blowing trumpets. Athaliah tore her clothes and screamed, “Treason, treason!” 15Jehoiada the priest ordered the officers of the units of hundreds, who were in charge of the army, “Bring her outside the temple to the guards. Put the sword to anyone who follows her.” The priest gave this order because he had decided she should not be executed in the Lord’s temple.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-16Verses 13-16 Athaliah hastened her own destruction. She herself was the greatest traitor, and yet was first and loudest in crying, Treason, treason! The most guilty are commonly the most forward to reproach others.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-14The pillar might be one of the two that Solomon placed at the temple entrance (1 Kings 7:15–22; 2 Chronicles 23:13). Or the Hebrew word could mean a raised platform built for the occasion so that everyone could see the new king. Athaliah cried out “Treason!” But this was ironic, since she herself had murdered to make herself queen (2 Kings 11:1).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people--The profound secrecy with which the conspiracy had been conducted rendered the unusual acclamations of the vast assembled crowd the more startling and roused the suspicions of the tyrant. she came ... into the temple of the Lord--that is, the courts, which she was permitted to enter by Jehoiada's directions (2Ki 11:8) in order that she might be secured.Read the comment
