Context of 1 Kings 11:15
13But I will not tear away the entire kingdom; I will leave your son one tribe for my servant David’s sake and for the sake of my chosen city Jerusalem.” 14The Lord brought against Solomon an enemy, Hadad the Edomite, a descendant of the Edomite king. During David’s campaign against Edom, Joab, the commander of the army, while on a mission to bury the dead, killed every male in Edom. 16For six months Joab and the entire Israelite army stayed there until they had exterminated every male in Edom. 17Hadad, who was only a small boy at the time, escaped with some of his father’s Edomite servants and headed for Egypt.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-25Verses 14-25 While Solomon kept close to God and to his duty, there was no enemy to give him uneasiness; but here we have an account of two. If against us, he can make us fear even the least, and the very grasshopper shall be a burden. Though they were moved by principles of ambition or revenge, God used them to correct Solomon.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-22Solomon's first enemy was Hadad. David had fought the Edomites and defeated them severely (2 Samuel 8:13–14; 1 Chronicles 18:13Œ14). When David and Joab died, Hadad returned to Edom, waiting for a chance to strike back at Israel.Read the comment

During the war of extermination, which Joab carried on in Edom (2Sa 8:13), this Hadad, of the royal family, a mere boy when rescued from the sword of the ruthless conqueror, was carried into Egypt, hospitably entertained, and became allied with the house of the Egyptian king. In after years, the thought of his native land…Read the comment
