Context of Psalms 2:8

6Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. 10Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

Commentaries on Psalms 2:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Ask of me, and I shall give thee - Here a second branch of Christ's office as Savior of the world is referred to; viz., his mediatorial office. Having died as an atoning sacrifice, and risen again from the dead, he was now to make intercession for mankind; and in virtue and on account of what he had done and suffered, he was, at his request, to have the nations for his inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for his possession. He was to become…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Ask of me - That is, of God. This is a part of the “decree” or purpose, as mentioned in Psalm 2:7. That decree embraced not only the design to constitute him as his Son, in the sense that he was to be king in Zion, but also the purpose to give him a dominion embracing “the heathen” and “the uttermost parts of the earth.” This wide dominion was to be given him on condition that he would “ask” for it, thus keeping up the idea that Yahweh, as such, is the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-9Verses 7-9 The kingdom of the Messiah is founded upon an eternal decree of God the Father. This our Lord Jesus often referred to, as what he governed himself by. God hath said unto him, Thou art my Son, and it becomes each of us to say to him, Thou art my Lord, my Sovereign'. The Son, in asking the heathen for his inheritance, desires their happiness in him; so that he pleads for them, ever lives to do so, and is able to save to the uttermost, and he…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8In the Old Testament, the relationship between the Lord and Israel’s king can be compared to a suzerain-vassal relationship. A suzerain was a great king. A vassal was a smaller king who served him. In this picture, the Lord is the great King. Israel’s king rules under his authority (see Deuteronomy Book Introduction, “Literary Form”). The Lord invites his anointed king to ask for what he needs (see Psalm 21:2, 4). All nations will be subject to David's…Read the comment
