Context of Zechariah 9:14
12Return to your fortress, you captives who have hope. Today I tell you that I will return to you double ⌞blessings⌟. 13I will bend Judah as my bow and draw my bow with Ephraim ⌞as its arrow⌟. I will stir up your people, Zion, against your people, Greece, and I will use you like a warrior’s sword. The Lord will appear over them, and his arrow will go out like lightning. The Almighty Lord will blow the ram’s horn and will march in the storms from the south. 15The Lord of Armies will defend them. They will destroy and trample the stones used in slings. They will drink and shout as if they were drunk. They will be filled like a sacrificial bowl ⌞used for sprinkling⌟ the corners of the altar. 16On that day the Lord their God will rescue them as the flock of his people. They will certainly sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14The Lord shall be seen over them - Shadowing and refreshing them, as the cloud did the camp in the wilderness. His arrow shall go forth as the lightning - They shall be conquered in a way that will show that God fights for his followers. Cyril: “He says plainly, that the Lord God will be with them and will fight in serried array with them and will with them subdue those who resist them.” It is as if he would say, “When they go forth and preach everywhere, the Lord shall work with them and confirm the word with signs following” Mark 16:20. “And His arrow shall go forth as the lightning.” Habakkuk directly…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-17Verses 9-17 The prophet breaks forth into a joyful representation of the coming of the Messiah, of whom the ancient Jews explained this prophecy. He took the character of their King, when he entered Jerusalem amidst the hosannas of the multitude. But his kingdom is a spiritual kingdom. It shall not be advanced by outward force or carnal weapons. His gospel shall be preached to the world, and be received among the heathen. A sinful state is a state of…Read the comment

The Lord will protect Israel, lead them in battle, and demonstrate his power. The ram’s horn calls people together (Numbers 10:2–3, 7–10; Isaiah 27:13) and announces God’s presence and power (Exodus 19:19; 20:18). The whirlwind shows God as a warrior with great power and quickness (Psalm 77:18; Isaiah 21:1; 29:6; 66:15). References to…Read the comment
