Context of Proverbs 3:11
9Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first and best part of all your income. 10Then your barns will be full, and your vats will overflow with fresh wine. Do not reject the discipline of the Lord, my son, and do not resent his warning, 12because the Lord warns the one he loves, even as a father warns a son with whom he is pleased. 13Blessed is the one who finds wisdom and the one who obtains understanding.

Commentaries on Proverbs 3:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Despise not the chastening of the Lord - The word מוסר musar signifies correction, discipline, and instruction. Teaching is essentially necessary to show the man the way in which he is to go; discipline is necessary to render that teaching effectual; and, often, correction is requisite in order to bring the mind into submission, without which it cannot acquire knowledge. Do not therefore reject this procedure of God; humble thyself under his mighty hand…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Despise be weary - The temper is not that of contempt. To struggle impatiently, to fret and chafe, when suffering comes on us, is the danger to which we are exposed when we do not accept it as from the hands of God. Compare Jonah 4:9; Job 5:17.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-12Verses 7-12 There is not a greater enemy to the fear of the Lord in the heart, than self-conceit of our own wisdom. The prudence and sobriety which religion teaches, tend not only to the health of the soul, but to the health of the body. Worldly wealth is but poor substance, yet, such as it is, we must honour God with it; and those that do good with what they have, shall have more to do more good with. Should the Lord visit us with trials and sickness…Read the comment
