Context of Numbers 8:11
9Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting, and assemble the whole community of Israel. 10Then bring the Levites into the Lord’s presence, and the Israelites will place their hands on them. Aaron will present the Levites to the Lord as an offering from the Israelites. Then they will be ready to do the Lord’s work. 12“The Levites will place their hands on the heads of the young bulls. Sacrifice one of them as an offering for sin and the other one as a burnt offering to the Lord. These sacrifices will make peace with the Lord for the Levites. 13Make the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons, and present them as an offering to the Lord.

The distinction between the “consecration” of the priests Numbers 8:21 of the Levites is marked. These rites of purification are similar to those incumbent on the priests of Egypt. Numbers 8:7 Water of purifying - literally, “sin water:” i. e. water to cleanse from sin; no doubt taken from the laver of the sanctuary, which was used by the priests for purification before they went…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-26Verses 5-26 Here we have directions for the solemn ordination of the Levites. All Israel must know that they took not this honour to themselves, but were called of God to it; nor was it enough that they were distinguished from others. All who are employed for God, must be dedicated to him, according to the employment. Christians must be baptized, ministers must be ordained; we must first give ourselves unto the Lord, and then our services. The Levites…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11The mention of Aaron's raised hands suggests that Israel offered the Levites to the Lord as a wave offering. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 11-1311-13. Thus were they first devoted as an offering to God, and by Him surrendered to the priests to be employed in His service. The…Read the comment
