7These were the families of Reuben. The total number of men was 43,730.

5Reuben was Israel’s firstborn. The descendants of Reuben were the family of Hanoch, the family of Pallu, 6the family of Hezron, and the family of Carmi. These were the families of Reuben. The total number of men was 43,730. 8Eliab was the son of Pallu, 9and Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram were the sons of Eliab. (It was Dathan and Abiram, men chosen by the community, who defied Moses and Aaron’s authority. They joined Korah’s followers when they defied the Lord’s authority.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-65After nearly 40 years, Israel registered their men of military age again. This was while camping on the plains of Moab across from Jericho (compare chapters 1–4). The overall population changed only slightly, with 603,550 in the first registration and 601,730 in the second. This nearly complete replacement of the population showed that the Lord remained faithful to Israel despite their repeated acts of rebellion (26:63–65).Read the comment
