Context of Joshua 13:8
6I will force out of the way of the people of Israel everyone who lives in the mountains from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim and all the people of Sidon. However, you must distribute the land as an inheritance to Israel by drawing lots, as I commanded you. 7So divide this land. It will be an inheritance for the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.” The tribes of Reuben and Gad with half of the tribe of Manasseh had received their inheritance east of the Jordan River, since the Lord’s servant Moses had already given it to them. 9The border extended from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, including the city in the middle of the valley, and the whole plateau from Medeba to Dibon. 10It included all the cities of King Sihon of the Amorites up to the border of Ammon. Sihon’s capital was Heshbon.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8-33Verses 8-33 The writer appends to the command of God Joshua 13:1-7 a statement that the other two tribes and a half had already had their inheritance marked out for them by Moses in the land east of Jordan. The boundaries of this territory as a whole are first set forth Joshua 13:8-14, and afterward the portions assigned within it to the two tribes and a half are severally described Joshua 13:14 See Deuteronomy 18:1-5 and notes. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-33Verses 7-33 The land must be divided among the tribes. It is the will of God that every man should know his own, and not take that which is another's. The world must be governed, not by force, but right. Wherever our habitation is placed, and in whatever honest way our portion is assigned, we should consider them as allotted of God; we should be thankful for, and use them as such, while every prudent method should be used to prevent disputes about…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-14Half the tribe of Manasseh and the tribes of Reuben and Gad asked Moses for land on the east side of the Jordan. This land was once the kingdoms of Sihon and Og (Numbers 21:21–35; 32:1–42). In return, they helped the rest of Israel claim their land west of the Jordan (Joshua 1:12–18; 4:12–13). Here, the author confirmed their ownership of these lands.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. With whom--Hebrew, "him." The antecedent is evidently to Manasseh, not, however, the half-tribe just mentioned, but the other half; for the historian, led, as it were, by the sound of the word, breaks off to describe the possessions beyond Jordan already assigned to Reuben, Gad, and the half of Manasseh (see on Nu 32:1; Nu 32:33; also see De 3:8-17). It may be proper to remark that it was wise to put these boundaries on record. In case of any…Read the comment
