Context of Jeremiah 50:40
38A drought will diminish their water supply, and it will dry up. Babylon is a land of idols, statues that will go crazy with fear. 39That is why desert animals will live with hyenas. Desert owls will also live there. It will no longer be inhabited or lived in for generations. Babylon will be like Sodom, Gomorrah, and their neighboring cities when I, God, destroyed them. No one will live there. No human will stay there,” declares the Lord. 41“People are going to come from the north. A great nation and many kings will rise from the ends of the earth. 42They will take hold of bows and spears. They will be cruel and have no compassion. They will sound like the sea when it roars. They will ride horses. They are ready for war, ready to attack you, people of Babylon.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40As God overthrew Sodom - As the very ground on which these cities stood, with all the plain, now lies under the Dead Sea; so Babylon and the adjacent country shall be rendered totally barren and unfruitful, and utterly incapable of being inhabited. And this is the fact concerning both countries. See Jeremiah 49:18.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-46Verses 33-46 It is Israel's comfort in distress, that, though they are weak, their Redeemer is strong. This may be applied to believers, who complain of the dominion of sin and corruption, and of their own weakness and manifold infirmities. Their Redeemer is able to keep what they commit to him; and sin shall not have dominion over them. He will give them that rest which remains for the people of God. Also here is Babylon's sin, and their punishment. The…Read the comment
