Context of Jeremiah 32:9
7‘Jeremiah, your cousin Hanamel, son of Shallum, is going to come to you and say, “Buy my field that is in Anathoth, because as the closest relative it is your responsibility to buy it.” ’ 8“Then, as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the prison. He said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. It is your responsibility to purchase it, because the rights of the closest relative belong to you. Buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that the Lord had spoken to me. “So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and gave him the money. The field cost seven ounces of silver. 10I signed the deed, sealed it, had people witness the signing of the deed, and paid out the silver. 11Then I took the sealed copy of the deed, containing the terms and conditions, as well as an unsealed copy.

Commentaries on Jeremiah 32:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Weighed him the money - It does not appear that there was any coined or stamped money among the Jews before the captivity; the Scripture, therefore, never speaks of counting money, but of weighing it. Seventeen shekels of silver - The shekel at this time must have been a nominal coin; it was a thing of a certain weight, or a certain worth. Seventeen shekels was the weight of the silver paid: but it might have been in one ingot, or piece. The shekel has…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Seventeen shekels of silver - literally, as in the margin, probably a legal formula. Jeremiah bought Hanameel‘s life-interest up to the year of Jubilee, and no man‘s life was worth much in a siege like that of Jerusalem. As Jeremiah had no children, at his death the land would devolve to the person who would have inherited it had Jeremiah not bought it. He therefore bought what never was and never could have been of the slightest use to him, and gave for…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-12Many people might have thought Jeremiah acted foolishly when he agreed to buy the land. After Jerusalem fell and many people went into exile, the land's value would drop to almost nothing. Still, Jeremiah immediately bought the field. Matthew 27:9–10 refers to the “what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet,” which might allude to this event.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. seventeen shekels of silver--As the shekel was only 2s. 4d.., the whole would be under £2, a rather small sum, even taking into account the fact of the Chaldean occupation of the land, and the uncertainty of the time when it might come to Jeremiah or his heirs. Perhaps the "seven shekels," which in the Hebrew (see Margin) are distinguished from the "ten pieces of silver," were shekels of gold [Maurer].Read the comment
