Context of Jeremiah 10:18

16Jacob’s God isn’t like them. He made everything, and Israel is the tribe that belongs to him. His name is the Lord of Armies. 17Pick up your bags. You are being blockaded. This is what the Lord says: I am going to throw out those who live in the land at this time and cause trouble for them so that they will feel it. 19Oh, I’m wounded! My wound is serious. Then I thought that this is my punishment, and I will bear it. 20My tent is destroyed, and all my ropes are broken. My children have left me and have disappeared. There’s no one to set up my tent again or put up my tent curtains.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Sling out - A similar metaphor for violent ejection occurs in Isaiah 22:18 (see the note). At this once - Or, “at this time.” Previous invasions had ended either in deliverance, or at most in temporary misfortune. God‘s long-suffering is exhausted, and this time Judaea must cease to be an independent nation. That they may find it so - Omit “so,” and explain either (1) “I will distress them” with the rigors of a siege “that they may feel it, i. e., the…Read the comment

But, sooner or later, sinners will find all things as the word of God has declared, and that its threatenings are not empty terrors. Submission will support the believer under every grief allotted to him; but what can render the load of Divine vengeance easy to be borne by those who fall under it in sullen despair?
