Context of Ezekiel 47:5
3With a measuring line in his hand, the man went eastward. He measured off 1,500 feet and led me through the water. The water came up to my ankles. 4Then he measured off another 1,500 feet and led me through the water. The water came up to my knees. He measured off another 1,500 feet and led me through the water. The water came up to my waist. Then he measured another 1,500 feet. But the water had risen so much that it became a river which I couldn’t cross. The river was too deep to cross except by swimming. 6Then he asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?” 7Then the man led me back along the bank of the river. As I went back, I saw many trees on both sides of the river.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 47:5
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5The rivers in Palestine were for the most part mere watercourses, dry in summer, in winter carrying the water along the wadys to the sea. The river of the vision is to have a continuous flow. Waters to swim in - When under Constantine the Roman empire had become Christian, the Church may be contemplated as the full river, to flow on through time until the final completion of Isaiah‘s prophecy Isaiah 11:9.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-5At first, the stream was only a small trickle flowing from the temple gate. As it moved farther away, it grew deeper and deeper. Soon it became too deep to walk through. The exiles needed this reminder. God often begins his work in small and quiet ways. Over time, what seems small can grow into something full and powerful by God’s action.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-23The happy fruit to the earth at large of God's dwelling with Israel in holy fellowship is that the blessing is no longer restricted to the one people and locality, but is to be diffused with comprehensive catholicity through the whole world. So the plant from the cedar of Lebanon is represented as gathering under its shelter "all fowl of every wing" (Eze 17:23). Even the desert places of the earth shall be made fruitful by the healing waters of the Gospel…Read the comment
