Context of Ezekiel 18:12
10“But suppose this person has a son who robs and murders. The son does all the things 11that his father never did. He eats at the illegal mountain worship sites. He dishonors his neighbor’s wife. He oppresses the poor and needy. He robs. He doesn’t return the security for a loan. He looks to idols for help. He does disgusting things. 13He lends money for interest and makes excessive profits. Will this person live? He will not live. He has done all these disgusting things. So he must die, and he will be responsible for his own death. 14“But suppose this person has a son. The son sees all the sins that his father does. He is afraid, so he doesn’t do such things.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Live die - In the writings of Ezekiel there is a development of the meaning of “life” and “death.” In the holy land the sanctions of divine government were in great degree temporal; so that the promise of “life” for “obedience,” the threatening of “death” for “disobedience,” in the Books of Moses, were regarded simply as temporal and national. In their exile this could not continue in its full extent, and the universality of the misfortune…Read the comment
