Context of Amos 2:3
1This is what the Lord says: Because Moab has committed three crimes, and now a fourth crime, I will not change my plans. The Moabites have cremated Edom’s king. 2I will send a fire on Moab and burn down the palaces of Kerioth. Moab will die during the noise of battle while troops are shouting and rams’ horns are blowing. I will take their judges away from them. I will kill all their officials at the same time. The Lord has said this. 4This is what the Lord says: Because Judah has committed three crimes, and now a fourth crime, I will not change my plans. The people of Judah have rejected the Lord’s Teachings and haven’t kept his laws. They have been led astray by false teachings, the same ones their ancestors followed. 5I will send a fire on Judah and burn down the palaces of Jerusalem.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3I will cut off the judge - It shall be so destroyed, that it shall never more have any form of government. The judge here, שופט shophet, may signify the chief magistrate. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3And I will cut off the judge - The title “judge” (shophet) is nowhere used absolutely of a king. Holy Scripture speaks in several places of “all the judges of the earth” Job 9:24; Psalm 2:10; Psalm 148:11; Proverbs 8:16; Isaiah 40:23. Hosea Hosea 13:10, under “judges,” includes “kings and princes,” as judging the people. The word “judge” is always used as one invested with the highest, but not regal authority, as of all the judges from the death of Joshua…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3Kerioth, a major town (Jeremiah 48:20–24), is mentioned on the Moabite Stone as a shrine to Chemosh, the god of Moab. The Moabites may have burned the remains of Edom's king or offered him as a human sacrifice at this site. Because of this act, God would destroy the king of Moab and his officers. This likely happened through an invasion by Sargon II of Assyria around 715 to 713 BC (compare Isaiah 15–16). Josephus, in Antiquities 10.9.7, suggests further…Read the comment
