Context of 2 Samuel 2:8
6May the Lord always show you kindness. I, too, will be good to you because you did this. 7Now, be strong and courageous. Because your master Saul is dead, the tribe of Judah has anointed me to be their king.” Ner’s son Abner, commander of Saul’s army, took Saul’s son Ishbosheth and brought him to Mahanaim. 9Abner made him king of Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin, that is, all Israel. 10Saul’s son Ishbosheth was 40 years old when he became king of Israel. He ruled for two years, but the tribe of Judah followed David.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Abner the son of Ner - This man had long been one of the chief captains of Saul's army, and commander-in-chief on several occasions; he was probably envious of David's power, by whom he had often been out-generalled in the field.Read the comment

Because Mahanaim was east of the Jordan River, Ish-bosheth’s rule was harder for David’s forces to attack. Later, King David also used this same area as a temporary place of safety after Absalom’s rebellion (2 Samuel 17:24…Read the comment
