Context of 2 Kings 19:29
27I know when you ⌞get up⌟ and sit down, when you go out and come in, and how you rage against me. 28Since you rage against me and your boasting has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bridle in your mouth. I will make you go back the way you came. “ ‘And this will be a sign for you, Hezekiah: You will eat what grows by itself this year and next year. But in the third year you will plant and harvest, plant vineyards, and eat what is produced. 30Those few people from the nation of Judah who escape will again take root and produce crops. 31Those few people will go out from Jerusalem, and those who escape will go out of Mount Zion. The Lord is determined to do this.’

Commentaries on 2 Kings 19:29
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29This shall be a sign unto thee - To Hezekiah; for to him this part of the address is made. Ye shall eat this year - Sennacherib had ravaged the country, and seed-time was now over, yet God shows them that he would so bless the land, that what should grow of itself that year, would be quite sufficient to supply the inhabitants and prevent all famine; and though the second year was the sabbatical rest or jubilee for the land, in which it was unlawful to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 29The prophet now once more addresses Hezekiah, and gives him a “sign,” or token, whereby he and his may be assured that Sennacherib is indeed bridled, and will not trouble Judaea anymore. It was a sign of the continued freedom of the land from attack during the whole of the remainder of Sennacherib‘s reign - a space of 17 years.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-34Verses 20-34 All Sennacherib's motions were under the Divine cognizance. God himself undertakes to defend the city; and that person, that place, cannot but be safe, which he undertakes to protect. The invasion of the Assyrians probably had prevented the land from being sown that year. The next is supposed to have been the sabbatical year, but the Lord engaged that the produce of the land should be sufficient for their support during those two years. As…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29-30this will be a sign: The Lord’s message of hope included a sign that Jerusalem would be saved from the siege. The sign was God providing food. Since the Assyrians had devastated the land, people would rely on random crop growth to survive. The food supply would still be limited the following year. But by the third year, regular planting and harvesting would resume.Read the comment
