Context of 2 Kings 14:22
20They brought him back by horse, and he was buried in Jerusalem, in the City of David, with his ancestors. 21All the people of Judah took Azariah, who was 16 years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. Azariah rebuilt Elath and returned it to Judah after King Amaziah lay down in death with his ancestors. 23Joash’s son Amaziah was in his fifteenth year as king of Judah when Jehoash’s son King Jeroboam of Israel began to rule in Samaria. Jeroboam ruled for 41 years. 24He did what the Lord considered evil. He didn’t turn away from any of the sins that Jeroboam (Nebat’s son) led Israel to commit.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 14:22
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22He built Elath - This city belonged to the Edomites; and was situated on the eastern branch of the Red Sea, thence called the Elanitic Gulf. It had probably suffered much in the late war; and was now rebuilt by Uzziah, and brought entirely under the dominion of Judah.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22Elath, or Eloth (marginal reference 1 Kings 9:26), was near Ezion-Geber, in the Gulf of Akabah. It had been lost to the Jews on the revolt of Edom from Joram 2 Kings 8:22. Uzziah‘s re-establishment of the place, rendered possible by his father‘s successes 2 Kings 14:7, was one of his first acts, and seems to imply a desire to renew the commercial projects which Solomon had successfully carried out, and which Jehoshaphat had vainly attempted 1 Kings 22:48.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-22Verses 15-22 Amaziah survived his conqueror fifteen years. He was slain by his own subjects. Azariah, or Uzziah, seems to have been very young when his father was slain. Though the years of his reign are reckoned from that event, he was not fully made king till eleven years afterwards.Read the comment
