Context of 2 Chronicles 33:1
Manasseh was 12 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for 55 years in Jerusalem. 2He did what the Lord considered evil by copying the disgusting things done by the nations that the Lord had forced out of the Israelites’ way. 3He rebuilt the illegal places of worship that his father Hezekiah had torn down. He set up altars dedicated to other gods—the Baals—and made a pole dedicated to the goddess Asherah as King Ahab of Israel had done. Manasseh, like Ahab, worshiped and served the entire army of heaven.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Manasseh was twelve years old - We do not find that he had any godly director; his youth was therefore the more easily seduced. But surely he had a pious education; how then could the principles of it be so soon eradicated?Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1Manasseh's and repentance. (1-20) Amon's wicked reign in Judah. (21-25) Verses 1-20 We have seen Manasseh's wickedness; here we have his repentance, and a memorable instance it is of the riches of God's pardoning mercy, and the power of his renewing grace. Deprived of his liberty, separated from his evil counsellors and companions, without any prospect but of ending his days in a wretched prison, Manasseh thought upon what had passed; he began to cry for…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-20Manasseh ruled for fifty-five years, from 697 to 642 BC, longer than any other king in Judah. His reign included a period when he ruled with his father, Hezekiah, from 697 to 686 BC. A long reign often indicated blessing, even though Manasseh did evil in the Lord's sight. The Chronicler describes his humiliation, repentance, and the restoration of worship in Judah.Read the comment
