Context of 2 Chronicles 12:13
11Whenever the king went into the Lord’s temple, guards carried the shields and then returned them to the guardroom. 12After Rehoboam humbled himself, the Lord was no longer angry with him and didn’t completely destroy him. So things went well in Judah. King Rehoboam strengthened his position in Jerusalem and ruled. He was 41 years old when he began to rule. He ruled for 17 years in Jerusalem, the city that the Lord chose from all the tribes of Israel, the city where the Lord put his name. (Rehoboam’s mother was an Ammonite woman named Naamah.) 14He did evil things because he was not serious about dedicating himself to serving the Lord. 15Aren’t the events concerning Rehoboam from first to last written in the records of the prophet Shemaiah and the records of the seer Iddo in the genealogies? There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam as long as they lived.

Commentaries on 2 Chronicles 12:13
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Was one and forty years old - Houbigant thinks he was but sixteen years old when he began to reign; and brings many and forcible arguments to prove that the number forty-one must be a mistake. That he was young when he came to the throne, is evident from his consulting the young men that were brought up with him, 2 Chronicles 10:8, 2 Chronicles 10:10. They were young men then; and if he was brought up with them, he must have been young then also. Besides…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1413-14. Rehoboam strengthened ... and reigned--The Egyptian invasion had been a mere predatory expedition, not extending beyond the limits of Judah, and probably, ere long, repelled by the invaded. Rehoboam's government acquired new life and vigor by the general revival of true religion, and his reign continued many years after the departure of Shishak. But he prepared not his heart to seek the Lord--that is, he did not adhere firmly to the good course of…Read the comment
