Context of 1 Samuel 17:54
52Then the soldiers of Israel and Judah rose up, shouted a battle cry, and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and to the gates of Ekron. Wounded Philistines lay on the road to Shaaraim and all the way to Gath and Ekron. 53When the Israelites came back from their pursuit of the Philistines, they looted all the goods in the Philistine camp. David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he kept Goliath’s armor in his tent. 55As Saul watched David going out against the Philistine, he asked Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this young man?” Abner answered, “I solemnly swear, as you live, Your Majesty, I don’t know.” 56The king said, “Find out whose son this young man is.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 54Jerusalem - See Judges 1:8 note. His tent - Perhaps the tabernacle. David had neither tent nor house of his own. It would be quite in accordance with David‘s piety that he should immediately dedicate to God the arms taken from the Philistine, in acknowledgment that the victory was not his own but the Lord‘s (compare 1 Samuel 21:9). His tabernacle, meaning the tabernacle which he had pitched (2 Samuel 6:17; compare Acts 15:16).Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 48-58Verses 48-58 See how frail and uncertain life is, even when a man thinks himself best fortified; how quickly, how easily, and by how small a matter, the passage may be opened for life to go out, and death to enter! Let not the strong man glory in his strength, nor the armed man in his armour. God resists the proud, and pours contempt on those who defy him and his people. No one ever hardened his heart against God and prospered. The history is recorded…Read the comment
