Context of 1 Samuel 1:16
14“How long are you going to stay drunk?” Eli asked her. “Get rid of your wine.” 15Hannah responded, “No sir. I’m not drunk. I’m depressed. I’m pouring out my heart to the Lord. Don’t take me to be a good-for-nothing woman. I was praying like this because I’ve been troubled and tormented.” 17Eli replied, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant your request.” 18“May you continue to be kind to me,” she said. Then the woman went her way and ate. She was no longer sad.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-18Verses 9-18 Hannah mingled tears with her prayers; she considered the mercy of our God, who knows the troubled soul. God gives us leave, in prayer, not only to ask good things in general, but to mention that special good thing we most need and desire. She spoke softly, none could hear her. Hereby she testified her belief of God's knowledge of the heart and its desires. Eli was high priest, and judge in Israel. It ill becomes us to be rash and hasty in…Read the comment
