Context of 1 Chronicles 7:15
13Naphtali’s sons were Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, and Shallum. They were Bilhah’s grandsons. 14Manasseh’s sons were Asriel and Machir. Their mother was Manasseh’s Aramean concubine. Machir was the first to settle Gilead. He married a wife from the Huppites and Shuppites. His wife’s name was Maacah. The name of his second son was Zelophehad. Zelophehad had only daughters. 16Maacah, Machir’s wife, had a son, and she named him Peresh. His brother’s name was Sheresh, whose sons were Ulam and Rakem. 17Ulam’s son was Bedan. These were the people of Gilead, descendants of Machir (son of Manasseh).

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 7:15
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-19These verses have several issues that suggest the Hebrew text might be damaged: Maacah is listed as both the sister and wife of Makir (1 Chronicles 7:15–16). Huppim and Shuppim were earlier listed with Benjamin (1 Chronicles 7:12), not Manasseh. Those considered Gileadites (1 Chronicles 7:16–17) are vaguely linked to Gilead, whose direct descendants are not listed (compare Numbers 26:30–33). The sons of Shemida are not connected to the genealogy (1…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 14-1514-15. The sons of Manasseh--or descendants; for Ashriel was a grandson, and Zelophehad was a generation farther removed in descent (Nu 26:33). The text, as it stands, is so confused and complicated that it is exceedingly difficult to trace the genealogical thread, and a great variety of conjectures have been made with a view to clear away the obscurity. The passage [1Ch 7:14, 15] should probably be rendered thus: "The sons of Manasseh were Ashriel, whom…Read the comment
