Context of Ezekiel 20:48
46"Son of man, set your face toward the southland; preach against the south, and prophesy against the forest land in the Negeb. 47Say to the forest of the Negeb, Hear the word of the Lord: Thus says the Lord God, Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every green tree in you and every dry tree. The blazing flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from south to north shall be scorched by it. All flesh shall see that I the Lord have kindled it; it shall not be quenched." 49Then I said, "Ah, Lord God! They are saying of me, 'Is he not a maker of parables?'"

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 45-49Verses 45-49 Judah and Jerusalem had been full of people, as a forest of trees, but empty of fruit. God's word prophesies against those who bring not forth the fruits of righteousness. When He will ruin a nation, who or what can save it? The plainest truths were as parables to the people. It is common for those who will not be wrought upon by the word, to blame it.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 45-49Like a parable, this prophecy both reveals and conceals its message. People complain that the prophet only speaks in riddles (see Matthew 13:10–17). It reveals that a powerful judgment is coming. This judgment is described as an all-consuming fire. That means it is like a fire that burns up every tree.Read the comment
