Context of 2 Samuel 10:5
3But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, "Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?" 4So Hanun took David's servants and shaved off half the beard of each and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away. When it was told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, "Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return." 6When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob, 12,000 men. 7And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 10:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Tarry at Jericho - This city had not been rebuilt since the time of Joshua; but there were, no doubt, many cottages still remaining, and larger dwellings also, but the walls had not been repaired. As it must have been comparatively a private place, it was proper for these men to tarry in, as they would not be exposed to public notice.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5The city of Jericho had not been officially rebuilt (see 1 Kings 16:34). However, the site lay next to the largest and most reliable spring in the land, so people continued to live nearby. Anyone traveling from Ammon to Jerusalem would pass by this area. Because of this, Jericho provided a quiet and private place where the men could stay hidden while they recovered from their humiliation.Read the comment
