Context of 2 Samuel 10:5
3the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun their lord, “Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he’s showing respect for your father? Instead, hasn’t David sent his emissaries in order to scout out the city, spy on it, and demolish it?” 4So Hanun took David’s emissaries, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes in half at the hips, and sent them away. When this was reported to David, he sent someone to meet them, since they were deeply humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards grow back; then return.” 6When the Ammonites realized they had become repulsive to David, they hired twenty thousand foot soldiers from the Arameans of Beth-rehob and Zobah, one thousand men from the king of Maacah, and twelve thousand men from Tob. 7David heard about it and sent Joab and all the elite troops.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 10:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Tarry at Jericho - This city had not been rebuilt since the time of Joshua; but there were, no doubt, many cottages still remaining, and larger dwellings also, but the walls had not been repaired. As it must have been comparatively a private place, it was proper for these men to tarry in, as they would not be exposed to public notice.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5The city of Jericho had not been officially rebuilt (see 1 Kings 16:34). However, the site lay next to the largest and most reliable spring in the land, so people continued to live nearby. Anyone traveling from Ammon to Jerusalem would pass by this area. Because of this, Jericho provided a quiet and private place where the men could stay hidden while they recovered from their humiliation.Read the comment
