Context of Revelation 7:8
612,000 from Asher's tribe, 12,000 from Naphtali's tribe, 12,000 from Manasseh's tribe, 712,000 from Simeon's tribe, 12,000 from Levi's tribe, 12,000 from Issachar's tribe, 12,000 from Zebulun's tribe, 12,000 from Joseph's tribe, 12,000 from Benjamin's tribe. 9After this, I looked again. I saw a very big crowd of people. There were so many people that nobody could count them. They came from every nation, from every tribe and from every language. They were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing long white clothes and they held branches of palm trees in their hands. 10They shouted loudly: ‘We worship our God who sits on the throne. And we worship the Lamb. They have saved us from Satan's power.’

Commentaries on Revelation 7:8
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5-8Verses 5-8 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand - That is, a selection was made, or a number sealed, as if it had been made from one of the tribes of the children of Israel - the tribe of Judah. If the remarks above made are correct, this refers to the Christian church, and means, in connection with what follows, that each portion of the church would furnish a definite part of the whole number sealed and saved. We are not required to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-8Who are the 144,000? This list of the tribes of Israel does not match the twelve physical tribes exactly. Instead, it shows that God knows exactly who belongs to him. By the 90s AD, Israel’s twelve tribes no longer existed. Ten tribes were scattered when Assyria conquered the northern kingdom of Israel (2 Kings 17:1–41). The early Christian church saw itself symbolically as the Israel of God (Matthew 19:28; Romans 2:28–29; 9:6–8; Galatians 3:29; 6:16…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-85-8. Judah (meaning praise) stands first, as Jesus' tribe. Benjamin, the youngest, is last; and with him is associated second last, Joseph. Reuben, as originally first-born, comes next after Judah, to whom it gave place, having by sin lost its primogeniture right. Besides the reason given above (see on Re 7:2), another akin for the omission of Dan, is, its having been the first to lapse into idolatry (Jud 18:1-31); for which same reason the name Ephraim…Read the comment
