Context of Psalms 22:14
12There is danger all round me, like the strong bulls of Bashan. I cannot move because my enemies are very near, all around me. 13They open their mouths like lions! They are ready to eat me! They are like lions that tear their food into pieces. My strength has gone, like water that is poured away. My bones do not join together properly. I feel weak inside and hope has disappeared. 15My mouth has become dry like a piece of a broken pot. My tongue sticks to my mouth. You have left me down in the dirt, as good as dead! 16Wicked people are everywhere around me. They are ready to attack me, like a group of wild dogs. They tear apart my hands and my feet.

Commentaries on Psalms 22:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14I am poured out like water - That is, as the old Psalter: Thai rought na mare to sla me than to spil water. The images in this verse are strongly descriptivr of a person in the deepest distress; whose strength, courage, hope, and expectation of succor and relief, had entirely failed. Our Lord's sufferings were extreme; but I cannot think there is any sound theologic sense in which these things can be spoken of Christ, either in his agony in the garden, or…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14I am poured out like water - The sufferer now turns from his enemies, and describes the effect of all these outward persecutions and trials on himself. The meaning in this expression is, that all his strength was gone. It is remarkable that we have a similar expression, which is not easily accounted for, when we say of ourselves that “we are as weak as water.” An expression similar to this occurs in Joshua 7:5: “The hearts of the people melted, and became…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-21Verses 11-21 In these verses we have Christ suffering, and Christ praying; by which we are directed to look for crosses, and to look up to God under them. The very manner of Christ's death is described, though not in use among the Jews. They pierced his hands and his feet, which were nailed to the accursed tree, and his whole body was left so to hang as to suffer the most severe pain and torture. His natural force failed, being wasted by the fire of…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 14-1514-15. Utter exhaustion and hopeless weakness, in these circumstances of pressing danger, are set forth by the most expressive figures; the solidity of the body is destroyed, and it becomes like water; the bones are parted; the heart, the very seat of vitality, melts like wax; all the juices of the system are dried up; the tongue can no longer perform its office, but lies parched and stiffened (compare Ge 49:4; 2Sa 14:14; Psa 58:8). In this, God is…Read the comment
