Context of Psalms 17:8
6I pray to you, God, because you will answer me. Please listen to me when I pray to you. 7Do great things that show your faithful love! You have the power to keep people safe from their enemies. You help them when they trust you for help. Please keep me safe, in the same way that people take care of their eyes. Keep me near to you, in the way that birds protect their babies under their wings. 9Keep me safe from the wicked men who attack me. My enemies are all around me, and they want to kill me! 10They refuse to be kind to anyone. They speak proud words.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Keep me as the apple of the eye - Or, as the black of the daughter of eye. Take as much care to preserve me now by Divine influence, as thou hast to preserve my eye by thy good providence. Thou hast entrenched it deeply in the skull; hast ramparted it with the forehead and cheek-bones; defended it by the eyebrow, eyelids, and eyelashes; and placed it in that situation where the hands can best protect it. Hide me under the shadow of thy wings - This is a…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Keep me as the apple of the eye - Preserve me; guard me; defend me, as one defends that which is to him most precious and valuable. In the original there is a remarkable strength of expression, and at the same time a remarkable confusion of gender in the language. The literal translation would be, “Keep me as the little man - the daughter of the eye.” The word “apple” applied to the eye means the pupil, the little aperture in the middle of the eye…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-15Verses 8-15 Being compassed with enemies, David prays to God to keep him in safety. This prayer is a prediction that Christ would be preserved, through all the hardships and difficulties of his humiliation, to the glories and joys of his exalted state, and is a pattern to Christians to commit the keeping of their souls to God, trusting him to preserve them to his heavenly kingdom. Those are our worst enemies, that are enemies to our souls. They are God's…Read the comment
