Context of Numbers 7:83
81He brought one young bull, one male sheep and one male lamb that was less than one year old. Those animals were for a burnt offering. 82He brought one male goat for a sin offering. He also brought two oxen, five male sheep, five male goats, and five male lambs that were less than one year old. Those animals were for the friendship offerings. That was the gift of Ahira, the son of Enan. 84The leaders of Israel brought these gifts to the altar when Moses poured special oil on it. They brought all the gifts in the list below. They brought 12 plates and 12 bowls that people had made from silver. 85Each plate weighed 130 shekels and each bowl weighed 70 shekels. All the silver weighed 2,400 shekels. That was the shekel of God's Holy Tent.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-89Verses 10-89 The princes and great men were most forward in the service of God. Here is an example to those in authority, and of the highest rank; they ought to use their honour and power, their estate and interest, to promote religion and the service of God in the places where they live. Though it was a time of joy and rejoicing, yet still, in the midst of their sacrifices, we find a sin-offering. As, in our best services, we are conscious that there is…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-83One by one, the tribal leaders brought their gifts for the dedication of the altar. Each tribe participated until the whole Hebrew confederation (the united group of twelve tribes) had taken part. The text repeats the description of each tribe’s gift. This repetition highlights the shared nature of the ceremony. Every tribe had a role in setting apart their place of worship for God. The careful listing of the gifts may reflect detailed record keeping…Read the comment
