Context of Numbers 15:33
31That person thought that the Lord's command was not important. He has not obeyed God's rules. So you must make that person completely separate from the people. He is a guilty person.’ 32When the Israelites were in the desert, a man was picking up sticks on the day of rest. Some people found him while he was picking up the sticks. They took him to Moses and Aaron and to all the people. 34They were not sure what to do with the man. So they put him by himself in a tent. Men stood at the door of the tent so that he could not leave it. 35The Lord said to Moses, ‘This man must die. All the people must take him outside the camp. They must throw stones at him to kill him.’

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-36This story gives an example of what Numbers 15:30–31 teaches. The Sabbath was the Lord’s holy day. The people were not allowed to ignore it or treat it as unimportant (Exodus 20:8–11; 31:14–15; 35:1–3).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 32-3432-34. a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day--This incident is evidently narrated as an instance of presumptuous sin. The mere gathering of sticks was not a sinful act and might be necessary for fuel to warm him or to make ready his food. But its being done on the Sabbath altered the entire character of the action. The law of the Sabbath being a plain and positive commandment, this transgression of it was a known and wilful sin, and it was…Read the comment
