Context of Numbers 10:6
4But you may want only the leaders of Israel's tribes to meet you. If you want that, a priest should make the sound from only one trumpet. 5But when the sound is one short sound, the tribes on the east side of the camp must start to travel. When they hear the next short sound, the tribes on the south side of the camp must start to travel. Short sounds from the trumpet will tell the people that they must start to travel. 7But when you want everyone to meet together, make a different sound with the trumpet. 8The priests, the sons of Aaron, must use the trumpets to make a noise. This is a rule for you and for all your descendants.

Commentaries on Numbers 10:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6When ye blow an alarm the second time - A single alarm, as above stated, was a signal for the eastward division to march; two such alarms, the signal for the south division; and probably three for the west division, and four for the north. It is more likely that this was the case, than that a single alarm served for each, with a small interval between them. The camps, or grand divisions of this great army, always lay, as we have already seen, to the east…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-8When it was time to journey to the next destination, the trumpets sounded to signal when to camp and when to move. This sound was in addition to the movement of the pillar of cloud (compare 9:15–22 and chapter 2).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-73-7. when they shall blow with them--There seem to have been signals made by a difference in the loudness and variety in the notes, suited for different occasions, and which the Israelites learned to distinguish. A simple uniform sound by both trumpets summoned a general assembly of the people; the blast of a single trumpet convoked the princes to consult on public affairs; notes of some other kind were made to sound an alarm, whether for journeying or…Read the comment
