Context of Nehemiah 12:22
20Kallai was the leader of Sallu's clan. Eber was the leader of Amok's clan. 21Hashabiah was the leader of Hilkiah's clan. Nethanel was the leader of Jedaiah's clan. During the time when Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan and Jaddua were the leaders of the priests, they recorded the names of the Levites and the priests who were leaders of their clans. At the time when King Darius ruled Persia, they stopped doing this. 23They wrote the names of Levi's descendants who were leaders of their clans in the history book of Israel. They did that until the time of Eliashib's son, Johanan. 24The leaders of the Levites were: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Kadmiel's son, Jeshua, and their relatives. The two groups stood opposite each other to sing and praise and thank God. They did this in the way that God's servant, King David, had commanded.

Alexander was so struck with the appearance of the priest, that he forbore all hostilities against Jerusalem, prostrated himself before Jaddua, worshipped the Lord at the temple, and granted many privileges to the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22These verses interrupt the account of the church officers in the time of Joiakim, resumed in Nehemiah 12:24. They appear to be an addition to the original text, made about the time of Alexander the Great, when the Books of Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah would seem to have first taken their existing shape. The same writer who introduced these verses, probably also added Nehemiah 12:11 to the original text. Darius the Persian - Probably Darius Codomannus…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 10-4710. Jeshua begat Joiakim, &c.--This enumeration was of great importance, not only as establishing their individual purity of descent, but because the chronology of the Jews was henceforth to be reckoned, not as formerly by the reigns of their kings, but by the successions of their high priests.Read the comment
