Context of Leviticus 17:3
1The Lord said to Moses, 2‘Tell this to Aaron and his sons and all the people. The Lord has given all these rules. If a person sacrifices a bull, a sheep or a goat in the fields, that is a sin. Or if a person sacrifices it in the camp, that is a sin. 4The animal is an offering to the Lord. The person should bring it to the door of the tabernacle. He should offer it to the Lord there. The person who offers a sacrifice anywhere else has sinned. He has sacrificed an animal in the wrong way. He must leave the camp. 5This rule will stop the people giving sacrifices to the Lord in the fields. They must bring their gifts to the priest. They will be friendship offerings to the Lord. The priest will be at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3-7Verses 3-7 Every domesticated animal that was slain for food was a sort of peace-offering Leviticus 17:5. This law could only be kept as long as the children of Israel dwelt in their camp in the wilderness. The restriction was removed before they settled in the holy land, where their numbers and diffusion over the country would have rendered its strict observance impossible. See Deuteronomy 12:15-16, Deuteronomy 12:20-24. Leviticus 17:4 Blood shall be…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-9These rules show that unsupervised sacrifices could lead a mixture of pagan practices with true worship of the Lord (see also Deuteronomy 12:15–21; Leviticus 17:7). Israel camped around the Tent of Meeting so it was easy to bring an animal to the sanctuary for slaughter (see also Deuteronomy 12:15–21). Deuteronomy 12:20–24 anticipates Israel settling in the land and the challenges of this rule. It allowed slaughtering and eating meat without bringing it…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-163-4. What man ... killeth an ox--The Israelites, like other people living in the desert, would not make much use of animal food; and when they did kill a lamb or a kid for food, it would almost always be, as in Abraham's entertainment of the angels [Ge 18:7], an occasion of a feast, to be eaten in company. This was what was done with the peace offerings, and accordingly it is here enacted, that the same course shall be followed in slaughtering the animals…Read the comment
