Context of Leviticus 17:2
1The Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell this to Aaron and his sons and all the people. The Lord has given all these rules. 3If a person sacrifices a bull, a sheep or a goat in the fields, that is a sin. Or if a person sacrifices it in the camp, that is a sin. 4The animal is an offering to the Lord. The person should bring it to the door of the tabernacle. He should offer it to the Lord there. The person who offers a sacrifice anywhere else has sinned. He has sacrificed an animal in the wrong way. He must leave the camp.

Commentaries on Leviticus 17:2
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-2This section explains how the people of Israel were to live in holiness. Holiness is not just one quality of God. It describes all that God is—his person, nature, and character (see study note on Exodus 3:5). God's "glory" demonstrates his holiness (see Leviticus 9:6). God's covenant with Israel meant the people and the nation shared in God's holiness. This holiness relied on Israel's relationship with God. This relationship required Israel to meet…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-163-4. What man ... killeth an ox--The Israelites, like other people living in the desert, would not make much use of animal food; and when they did kill a lamb or a kid for food, it would almost always be, as in Abraham's entertainment of the angels [Ge 18:7], an occasion of a feast, to be eaten in company. This was what was done with the peace offerings, and accordingly it is here enacted, that the same course shall be followed in slaughtering the animals…Read the comment
