Context of Judges 5:24
22As for the horses of Sisera's army, their feet made a loud noise as they ran away. 23The Lord's angel says, “Punish Meroz! Punish the people who live there, because they did not come to help the Lord. They did not agree to fight against the Lord's strong enemy.” But Jael should receive great honour! Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, should receive more honour than all other women who live in tents. 25Sisera asked her for water to drink, and she gave him milk. She gave him the best cream in a beautiful bowl. 26She took a tent peg in her left hand. She took a worker's hammer in her right hand. She hit the peg through Sisera's head. She broke his skull. She broke it completely. She knocked the sharp peg through his head.

Commentaries on Judges 5:24
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24Blessed above women shall Jael - be - She shall be highly celebrated as a most heroic woman; all the Israelitish women shall glory in her. I do not understand these words as expressive of the Divine approbation towards Jael. See the observations at the end of Judges 4:24; (note). The word bless, both in Hebrew and Greek, often signifies to praise, to speak well of, to celebrate. This is most probably its sense here.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24The blessing here pronounced is in strong contrast with the curse of Meroz. Deborah speaks of Jael‘s deed by the light of her own age, which did not make manifest the evil of guile and bloodshed; the light in ours does.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-31Verses 24-31 Jael had a special blessing. Those whose lot is cast in the tent, in a low and narrow sphere, if they serve God according to the powers he has given them, shall not lose their reward. The mother of Sisera looked for his return, not in the least fearing his success. Let us take heed of indulging eager desires towards any temporal good, particularly toward that which cherishes vain-glory, for that was what she here doted on. What a picture does…Read the comment
