Context of Judges 1:7
5In the battle, they found King Adoni-Bezek and they attacked him there. 6The king ran away, but the Israelites caught him. They cut off his thumbs and his big toes. King Adoni-Bezek said, ‘God has punished me because I did the same thing to 70 other kings. I cut off their thumbs and big toes. I made them pick up bits of food to eat under my table.’ The Israelites took King Adoni-Bezek back to Jerusalem. He died there. 8Judah's army then attacked Jerusalem. They took the city for themselves. They killed the people who lived there and they burnt down the buildings. 9Then they went to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negev and in the low hills in the west.

Having their thumbs and their great toes cut off - That this was an ancient mode of treating enemies we learn from Aelian, who tells us, Var. Hist. l. ii., c. 9, that "the Athenians, at the instigation of Cleon, son of Cleaenetus, made a decree that all the inhabitants of the island of Aegina should have the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Threescore and ten kings - We may infer from this number of conquered kings, that the intestine wars of the Canaanites were among the causes which, under God‘s Providence, weakened their resistance to the Israelites. Adoni-Bezek‘s cruelty to the subject kings was the cause of his receiving (compare the marginal references) this chastisement. The loss of the thumb would make a man unfit to handle a sword or a bow; the loss of his big toe would impede his…Read the comment

Threescore and ten kings--So great a number will not appear strange, when it is considered that anciently every ruler of a city or large town was called a king. It is not improbable that in that southern region of Canaan, there might, in earlier times, have been even more till a turbulent chief like Adoni-bezek devoured them in his insatiable ambition.Read the comment
