Context of Joshua 8:28
26Joshua continued to point his spear at Ai, until his army had killed every person who lived there. 27But the Israelites took the valuable things and the animals for themselves. That was what the Lord had told Joshua. Joshua burned the city and he broke down its walls. It is still like that today. 29He hanged the king of Ai on a tree. He left his body there until evening. At sunset, Joshua told his men to cut the body down. They threw it on the ground outside the city's gate. They covered it with a heap of stones. Those stones are still there today. 30Then Joshua built an altar on Ebal mountain, to worship the Lord, Israel's God.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-29Verses 23-29 God, the righteous Judge, had sentenced the Canaanites for their wickedness; the Israelites only executed his doom. None of their conduct can be drawn into an example for others. Especial reason no doubt there was for this severity to the king of Ai; it is likely he had been notoriously wicked and vile, and a blasphemer of the God of Israel.Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2828. Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever--"For ever" often signifies "a long time" (Ge 6:3). One of the remarkable things with regard to the tell we have identified with Ai is its name--the tell of the heap of stones--a name which to this day remains [Van De Velde].Read the comment
