Context of Jeremiah 49:11
9If people came to pick your grapes, they would leave a few grapes on the vines. If robbers came at night to take your things, they would only take the things that they needed. 10But I will take everything from Esau's descendants, so that they have nothing. I will open their secret places, so that they have nowhere to hide. The enemy will destroy them and their children, family and friends. None of them will remain alive. But I will take care of your widows and the children who have no family. You can trust me to keep them safe.’ 12The Lord says, ‘I had to punish even those people who did not deserve my great punishment. So you will certainly not escape my punishment! You will have to drink my anger from the cup that I give to you. 13I, the Lord, promise you this, with the authority of my own name: Bozrah city will become a heap of stones. The people of other nations will think that it is disgusting. They will laugh at it. They will use its name as a curse. All the towns and villages around it will be heaps of stones for ever.’

Commentaries on Jeremiah 49:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Leave thy fatherless children - The connection of this with the context is not easy to be discerned; but, as a general maxim, it is of great importance. Widows and orphans are the peculiar care of God. He is as the best of fathers to the one, and the most loving of husbands to the other. Even the widows and orphans of Esau, who escape the general destruction, shall be taken care of by the Lord.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7-22Verses 7-22 Edom stretched along the south of Judah from the border of Moab on the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean and the Arabian deserts, and held the same relation to Judah which Moab held toward the kingdom of Israel. Although expressly reserved from attack by Moses Deuteronomy 2:5, a long feud caused the Edomites to cherish so bitter an enmity against Judah, that they exulted with cruel joy over the capture of Jerusalem by the Chaldaeans, and showed…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-22Verses 7-22 The Edomites were old enemies to the Israel of God. But their day is now at hand; it is foretold, not only to warn them, but for the sake of the Israel of God, whose afflictions were aggravated by them. Thus Divine judgments go round from nation to nation; the earth is full of commotion, and nothing can escape the ministers of Divine vengeance. The righteousness of God is to be observed amidst the violence of men.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-11Harvesters usually left some of the crop for the poor (Leviticus 19:9–10). Thieves would take only the grapes they could grab quickly and easily. The invaders would take their time and ruthlessly strip Edom bare, leaving only ruin behind. However, the Lord promised to show mercy to the defeated nation's orphans and widows.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Thy fatherless and widows must rest their hope in God alone, as none of the adult males shall be left alive, so desperate will be the affairs of Edom. The verse also, besides this threat, implies a promise of mercy to Esau in God's good time, as there was to Moab and Ammon (Jr 49:6; Jr 48:47); the extinction of the adult males is the prominent idea (compare Jr 49:12).Read the comment
