Context of Jeremiah 33:16
14The Lord also says, “A time will soon come when I do good things for the nations of Israel and Judah. I will do what I have promised to do for them. 15At that time, I will cause a descendant of David to be born. He will be righteous. He will grow like a branch on the tree of David's family. He will do what is right and fair in the land. When he rules, the people of Judah will be safe. Jerusalem's people will live in peace. People will give this name to the city: ‘The Lord is our righteous Saviour.’ ” 17The Lord says, “One of David's descendants will always rule as king over the nation of Israel. 18There will always be priests who are descendants of Levi. They will serve me in my temple. They will always be there to offer burnt offerings, grain offerings and other sacrifices to me.” ’

Commentaries on Jeremiah 33:16
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16And this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness - See what has been said on Jeremiah 23:6; (note), which is generally supposed to be a strictly parallel passage: but they are very different, and I doubt whether they mean exactly the same thing. As to our translation here, it is ignorant, and almost impious; it says that Jerusalem, for that is the antecedent, shall be called The Lord our Righteousness. The pronoun לה lah…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-26Verses 14-26 To crown the blessings God has in store, here is a promise of the Messiah. He imparts righteousness to his church, for he is made of God to us righteousness; and believers are made the righteousness of God in him. Christ is our Lord God, our righteousness, our sanctification, and our redemption. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. But in this world prosperity and adversity succeed each other, as light and darkness, day and night. The…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16The LORD Our Righteousness: Hebrew Yahweh Tsidqenu; see Jeremiah 23:5–6, where this title refers to the Messiah. This name reverses Zedekiah’s name (Tsidqiyyahu, “Righteous is the Lord”). Zedekiah did not live up to his name, but the Messiah would fulfill it.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1616. Jerusalem--In Jr 23:6, instead of this, it is "Israel." "The name" in the Hebrew has here to be supplied from that passage; and for "he" (Messiah, the antitypical "Israel"), the antecedent there (Is 49:3), we have "she" here, that is, Jerusalem. She is called by the same name as Messiah, "The Lord Our Righteousness," by virtue of the mystical oneness between her (as the literal representative of the spiritual Church) and her Lord and Husband. Thus…Read the comment
