Context of Jeremiah 31:39
37The Lord says, ‘Nobody can measure the size of the sky. Nobody can dig down to the bottom of the earth's foundations. In the same way, I can never turn away from all Israel's people. I will not leave them, even though they have done wicked things.’ That is what the Lord says. 38The Lord says this: ‘The time will soon come when this city of Jerusalem belongs to me again. You will build it all again, from the tower of Hananel to the Corner gate. The edge of the city will go straight from there to Gareb hill. Then it will turn south and go to Goah. 40The whole area will belong to the Lord as a holy place. It will include the valley where they throw dead bodies and the ashes from sacrifices. It will include all the fields of the Kidron valley in the east, as far north as the corner of the Horse Gate. All of that will be my holy place. Nobody will ever again take the city or destroy it.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 39Upon the hill Gareb - Gareb and Goath are out of the limits of this city. The latter is supposed to be Golgotha; that is, the heap of Gotha, which, being the place where our Lord was crucified, was without the city. These hills were a little to the north-west of the old city walls: but are destined to be within the new city. See Dr. Blayney on all these verses.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-40Verses 35-40 As surely as the heavenly bodies will continue their settled course, according to the will of their Creator, to the end of time, and as the raging sea obeys him, so surely will the Jews be continued a separate people. Words can scarcely set forth more strongly the restoration of Israel. The rebuilding of Jerusalem, and its enlargement and establishment, shall be an earnest of the great things God will do for the gospel church. The personal…Read the comment
