Context of Jeremiah 31:36
34‘Then people will not have to teach their friends or their family about me. They will all know me already. The important people and the ordinary people will all know me. I will forgive the wicked things that they have done. I will no longer think about their sins.’ That is what the Lord says. 35The Lord is the one who causes the sun to shine during the day. He causes the moon and the stars to shine at night. He causes the waves of the sea to move around and they make a loud noise. He is the Lord Almighty, and he makes this promise: ‘I will always take care of Israel's people as my special nation. I will always cause the laws that rule everything to continue. I could never forget those laws, and I could never forget my people.’ 37The Lord says, ‘Nobody can measure the size of the sky. Nobody can dig down to the bottom of the earth's foundations. In the same way, I can never turn away from all Israel's people. I will not leave them, even though they have done wicked things.’ That is what the Lord says. 38The Lord says this: ‘The time will soon come when this city of Jerusalem belongs to me again. You will build it all again, from the tower of Hananel to the Corner gate.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36If those ordinances - As sure as the sun shall give light to the day, and the moon to the night, so surely shall the Jews continue to be a distinct people. The same thing is expressed in other words in the next verse. Hitherto this prophecy has been literally fulfilled; the Jews are still a distinct people from all the dwellers upon earth. Every attempt that has been made in any country to naturalize and unite them with the people of that country, has…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 36If those - If these. From the uniformity of God‘s operations in the material world, the prophet deduces the certainty of a similar uniformity in God‘s dealings with man in things spiritual. A nation - A people. Israel has long ceased to be a nation, but it still exists as a numerous, influential, and distinct people. In Matthew 28:19-20 Jeremiah‘s prophecy receives its Christian application, and Israel becomes the Church, with the promise of perpetual…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-40Verses 35-40 As surely as the heavenly bodies will continue their settled course, according to the will of their Creator, to the end of time, and as the raging sea obeys him, so surely will the Jews be continued a separate people. Words can scarcely set forth more strongly the restoration of Israel. The rebuilding of Jerusalem, and its enlargement and establishment, shall be an earnest of the great things God will do for the gospel church. The personal…Read the comment

But their preservation as a distinct people amidst violent persecutions, though scattered among all nations for eighteen centuries, unamalgamated, whereas all other peoples under such circumstances have become incorporated with the nations in which they have been dispersed, is a perpetual standing miracle (compare Jr 33:20; Psa 148:6; Is 54:9, 10).Read the comment
