Commentaries on Jeremiah 27:1
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim - It is most evident that his prophecy was delivered about the fourth year of Zedekiah, and not Jehoiakim, as in the text. See Jeremiah 28:1. Three of Kennicott's MSS. (one in the text, a second in the margin, and the third upon a rasure) have Zedekiah; so likewise have the Syriac and the Arabic. Houbigant, Lowth, Blayney, Dahler, and others declare for this reading against that in the present text. And it is…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1Of Jehoiakim - Really, of Zedekiah, as the Syriac reads (see Jeremiah 27:3). In the Septuagint the verse is missing. Some scribe has confused the title of this chapter with that of Jeremiah 26.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1The neighbouring nations to be subdued. (Jr 27:1-11) Zedekiah is warned to yield. (Jr 27:12-18) The vessels of the temple to be carried to Babylon, but afterwards to be restored. (Jr 27:19-22) Verses 1-11 Jeremiah is to prepare a sign that all the neighbouring countries would be made subject to the king of Babylon. God asserts his right to dispose of kingdoms as he pleases. Whatever any have of the good things of this world, it is what God sees fit to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-22The Lord told Jeremiah to send messages to the ambassadors from nearby countries to announce the Lord’s judgment on them. Jeremiah was to show his message by wearing a wooden yoke. This event happened in 594 to 593 BC (see Jeremiah 28:1).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-221. Jehoiakim--The prophecy that follows was according to this reading given in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, fifteen years before it was published in the reign of Zedekiah to whom it refers; it was thus long deposited in the prophet's bosom, in order that by it he might be supported under trials in his prophetic career in the interim [Calvin]. But "Zedekiah" may be the true reading. So the Syriac and Arabic Versions. Jr 27:3, 12; Jr 28:1, confirm this…Read the comment
