Context of Jeremiah 14:11
9You seem to be like a helpless person. You are like a brave fighter who has lost his strength to save anyone. But surely you are among us, Lord. We belong to you as your own people. Do not leave us alone!’ 10The Lord says this about his people: ‘These people love to go wherever they want. They do not try to stay near to me. So they do not please me. Now I will remember the wrong things that they have done. I will punish them for their sins.’ The Lord said to me, ‘Do not pray that I will do any more good things for these people. 12Even if they fast, I will not listen when they ask me for help. I will not accept the burnt offerings or grain offerings that they offer to me. Instead, I will use war, famine and disease to destroy them.’ 13I said, ‘Lord God, the prophets are deceiving the people. They say that there will not be any war or famine or disease that will hurt the people. Instead, they say that you have promised peace in our land.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Pray not for this people - They are ripe for destruction, intercede not for them. O, how dreadful is the state of that people in reference to whom the Lord says to his ministers, Pray not for them; or, what amounts nearly to a prohibition, withholds from his ministers the spirit of prayer and intercession in behalf of the people!Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-16Verses 10-16 The Lord calls the Jews "this people," not "his people." They had forsaken his service, therefore he would punish them according to their sins. He forbade Jeremiah to plead for them. The false prophets were the most criminal. The Lord pronounces condemnation on them; but as the people loved to have it so, they were not to escape judgments. False teachers encourage men to expect peace and salvation, without repentance, faith, conversion, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-12For the third time (see Jeremiah 7:16; 11:14), God told Jeremiah not to pray for the people of Judah and Jerusalem. Fasting would be pointless because the Lord had decided to ignore them. The priests' burnt and grain offerings, which the Lord had given Moses as a way to worship him (see Leviticus 1–2), would be wasted because the Lord would not accept them. Instead, the Lord would respond with war, famine, and disease.Read the comment
