Context of Habakkuk 3:9
7I see the tents where Cushan's people live, and the people are afraid. The people in Midian are shaking with fear. 8Was it the rivers that made you angry, Lord? Did the sea make you so angry? You rode on your chariots as horses pulled them! You rode into battle to win against your enemies. You have prepared your bow. You are ready to shoot your arrows. Selah. You send rivers of water to cut the earth into pieces. 10The mountains see you and they shake. Rain pours down from the sky and it causes floods. The deep sea roars and it lifts its waves up high. 11You shoot your bright arrows so that the sun and the moon stand still in the sky. Your bright spear flies like lightning, and the sun and the moon do not move!

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Thy bow was made quite naked - That is, it was drawn out of its case; as the arrows had their quiver, so the bows had their cases. A fine oriental bow and bow-case, with quiver and arrows, are now before me; they show with what propriety Jehovah is represented as taking his bow out of its case, in order to set his arrow upon the cord, to shoot at his enemies. It is not the drawing out, or making bare the arrow, that is mentioned here; but the taking the…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 3-15Verses 3-15 God's people, when in distress, and ready to despair, seek help by considering the days of old, and the years of ancient times, and by pleading them with God in prayer. The resemblance between the Babylonish and Egyptian captivities, naturally presents itself to the mind, as well as the possibility of a like deliverance through the power of Jehovah. God appeared in his glory. All the powers of nature are shaken, and the course of nature…Read the comment

Compare Is 22:6, "Kir uncovered the shield." according to the oaths of the tribes even thy word--that is, Thy oaths of promise to the tribes of Israel (Psa 77:8; Lu 1:73, 74). Habakkuk shows that God's miraculous interpositions for His people were not limited to one time, but that God's oaths to His people are sure ground for their always…Read the comment
