Context of Genesis 5:28

26After Lamech was born, Methuselah lived for 782 years. During this time, he had other sons and daughters. 27Methuselah was 969 years old when he died. When Lamech was 182 years old, he had a son. 29He called his son Noah. Lamech said, ‘He will help us in our difficult work on the land. We have pain when we work on the land to get food. That is because the Lord God cursed the ground.’ 30After Noah was born, Lamech lived for 595 years. During this time, he had other sons and daughters.

He lived 969 years, the longest that any man ever lived on earth; but the longest liver must die at last. Noah signifies rest; his parents gave him that name, with a prospect of his being a great blessing to his generation. • Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 28-29Like Enoch (5:21–24), the typical family line pattern is interrupted to share key theological details about Noah. The name Noah sounds like the Hebrew words nakham, which means "relief" or "comfort," and nuakh, which means "rest." Noah was the first person born after Adam died (see study note on 5:5). His father, Lamech, hoped Noah would undo the curse caused by Adam's sin (3:17). See 8:21; 2 Corinthians 1:3–7; 2 Thessalonians 2:16–17.Read the comment

It is useless to inquire whether and what secondary causes may have contributed to this…Read the comment
