Context of Genesis 2:3
1In that way God finished making the heavens and the earth, and everything that was in them. 2The seventh day came. Then God stopped the work that he had been doing. He had finished his work and he rested on the seventh day. God blessed the seventh day. He made it a special day, because he had finished making everything. He did not work on that day. 4This is what happened when God made the heavens and the earth. When the Lord God made the heavens and the earth, 5there were no plants or grasses growing on the earth. That was because the Lord God had not sent any rain on the earth. Also, there was nobody to dig the soil so that plants would grow.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3And God blessed the seventh day - The original word ברך barach, which is generally rendered to bless, has a very extensive meaning. It is frequently used in Scripture in the sense of speaking good of or to a person; and hence literally and properly rendered by the Septuagint , from , good or well, and , I speak. So God has spoken well of the Sabbath, and good to them who conscientiously observe it. Blessing is applied both to God and man: when God is said…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3During the first six days of creation, God separated light from darkness, day from night, and water from dry land. The final act of creation separated the ordinary from the holy. This was the basis for Israel’s worship. It also anticipated a future time of rest (Hebrews 4:1–11; 12:2; 13:14). The lack of the usual "evening … morning" phrase shows the creator's desire for endless fellowship with humans.Read the comment

The institution of the Sabbath is as old as creation, giving rise to that weekly division of time which prevailed in the earliest ages. It is a wise and beneficent law, affording that regular interval of rest which the physical nature of man and the animals employed in his service requires, and the neglect…Read the comment
